Title: psychiatry and the 5th precept
Author: Willemien Hoogendoorn

A close Buddhist friend of mine has been sectioned many times (not at this moment)

While being sectioned he has been drugged injected with many psychiatric medicines against his will.

My simple question is

Is he denied his freedom of religion in this?

The fifth precept forbids the intake from mind altering substances.

and what is the worth of psychiatric drugs if they are not mind altering.

In this case there is no question of taking them voluntary or not.
Just the right not to have then forced upon/ in him.

(a bit like Jehova witnesses have the right to refuse blood transfusion for themselves)

hope on an interesting discussion

.

Your post raises some interesting questions.

However, the fifth precept is not usually considered to apply to all mind altering substances, otherwise caffeine and tobacco would be prohibited. In fact, it is intoxicants, of which the main culprit is alcohol, which are to be avoided. I think many buddhists today would consider cannabis and some other recreational drugs to also fall within the fifth precept.

There is also the question of intent. If a sick person is adminstered a drug for the purpose of alleviating his/her medical condition then this is a skilful intent. If it is adminstered for the purpose of intoxicating them, then this is not a good motive.

I suppose this depends upon ones interpretation of the Fifth Precept.

As Sloth and Torpor (what an interesting choice of name) pointed out the Fifth Precept can be interpreted as a vow not to indulge in intoxicating substances that cloud ones mind as this hinders ones ability to cultivate right concentration and mindfulness (amongst other things).

I suppose you could make the claim that your interpretation of the Fifth Precept includes any mind altering substance and, therefore, being forced to take the psychiatric drugs denies freedom of religion. However, as has also been pointed out by Sloth and Torpor, it may not be in the individuals best interest to refuse the drugs, especially if the intent is to help and to treat your friend.

Regards,

Nick

Hello Willemien
I appreciate your concern for your friend, [or philosophical enquiry].

The precepts as I understand them, are an undertaking by an individual to develop a wiser/ethical/more compassionate lifestyle. They are not commandments or prescriptions from an external source.

The principle of intention is particularly relevant in Buddhist practices, - all actions with intention for good or for ill will carry a resultant fruit for the practitioner.

We can consider a more easily understood analogy with the first precept of not killing [ or more subtly 'harming'] living beings. To step on a tiny insect unintentionally is not breaking the first precept.

Your friend is not seeking, intentionally, mind altering drugs. They are being prescribed as a medical treatment. He, it seems to me, is not breaking his intention to follow the the fifth precept by swallowing them.

One assumes the doctors are prescribing with good intention, but then they are the heirs of the karmic result and thats another matter.
