Around 50 people gathered at the Retreat Centre at Amaravati Buddhist Monastery for the latest Day of Practice organised by the Amaravati Lay Buddhist Association (ALBA) last Saturday, 6th March 2010. The day was led by Alison Moore and focused on how the Buddha’s teachings reveal themselves in daily life and how they can help to make sense of it. Alison highlighted the reality of living with the changing seasons of life, particularly aging and sickness, and used English and European poetry to illustrate the theme, as well as the Sallatha Sutta: The Arrow (SN 36.6), translated from the Pali by Nyanaponika Thera.
The day combined the opportunity to practise meditation in peaceful surroundings as well as to take part in some lively discussion of the theme. Participants shared their own experiences of coming to terms with the sense of loss as each stage of life gives way to the next, and explored ways in which we can all cultivate equanimity.
ALBA holds events each month at Amaravati, including Days of Practice, weekend retreats and one five-day retreat each year. If you would like to receive ALBA’s monthly email bulletin giving details of forthcoming events and of ALBA’s other activities, email Alison Moore to subscribe.
